Should one be judged by one’s appearance or one’s character ?
Consider a scenario in which you are standing alone at bus stand or at office or at pub, would you prefer the person approaching you be good in appearance or good in character ? Character will definitely trump appearance but still we always judge a person by his or her appearance. The world has started believing in first appearance instead of first impression.
Differential behavior is one of the repercussions of getting judged by appearance. The quality of clothes decides the behavior one will get from a stranger. If you are in need of help or money from a stranger, don’t forget to wear good clothes because you will not want to hurt your chances. In all the social experiments, reception towards a well dressed kid is always higher than a sooted kid. Ideally shouldn’t it be other way round ?
During your college life, on what basis did you rate your teachers? Studies show that students tend to rate their professor’s performance more on the basis of physical attractiveness than on the knowledge and their ability to explain. Certainly appearance does not has any impact on the quality of teaching of a professor.
Studies also show that children mostly select playmates based on physical attractiveness, as they think that physical appearance is often associated with being friendlier and smarter. Though we perceive this scenario as trivial, this gives a big blow to the confidence of not so attractive kids even though they might have a better character. Praise a kid or a person for his smartness , sincerity , character but never for his looks because looks is something which no one has control over but character is something which one builds on its own.
